Rule by lawyers is holding Britain back from prosperity
When British politicians talk about what makes Britain great, they love to talk about “the rule of law”, that vaunted principle which sets us apart from our competitors overseas.
In reality, they should be talking about “rule by lawyers” instead, as ever-larger areas of our society and economy are dominated by meddlesome legal practitioners.
Much ink has already been spilt about Labour’s record on criminal justice – and rightly so. The ticking time-bomb of early prisoner releases has been accompanied by a raft of new cases which expose the rot at the heart of our asylum system. For years now, human rights lawyers have prevented the Home Office from deporting dangerous foreign criminals, a trend which has only grown more concerning as asylum claims have increased.
