Folks at the Adam Smith Institute are always keen for polite conversation. This is why for our April TNG event we are talking about...socialism! Who better to speak on the topic than Dr Kristian Niemietz, IEA's Head of Political Economy and Fellow of the Age Endeavour Fellowship.

Dr Niemietz has recently published ‘Socialism: The failed idea that never dies’. While socialists distance themselves from contemporary and historical examples of socialism, they usually struggle to explain what exactly they would do differently. Kristian explores the history of socialist apologism and analyses how current aspirations (for example, ‘democratising the economy’) are nothing new.  

He previously worked as a Research Fellow at the Berlin-based Institute for Free Enterprise (IUF) and at King's College London, where he taught Economics throughout his postgraduate studies. He is a regular contributor to various journals in the UK, Germany and Switzerland.

The Next Generation events (or TNGs as we like to call them) are aimed at creating a network of young people interested in ideas that are shaping our world. They’ve been going for as long as the ASI has, and have been attended by people who went on to become Cabinet Ministers, Prime Ministers, Editors, and CEOs. (More importantly, the Tory and Labour spinner who dated on The Thick of It met at a TNG, according to an old BBC backstory document.) So whatever your politics, come along - we just like interesting ideas and we hope you do to. It’s under 30s, it’s informal and we normally end up at the Marquis of Granby.
